Updated – Kris Bryant leaves game in fifth inning with contusion on lower left leg. Cubs not anticipating Bryant to miss any time.
Bryant and Almora Jr. ran into one another calling for a fly in left center off the bat of pinch-hitter Tyler Holt in the top of the fifth. Bryant and Almora Jr. appeared to be calling for the ball but could not hear one another. Almora Jr. hit Bryant in the head, knocked his glasses and cap off. And both players ended up on the ground.
Bryant sat on the field for a short time, but got up and went back to his position in left field. Bryant finished the fifth and jogged off the field. Matt Szczur batted for Bryant with two on and two out in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cubs announced Kris Bryant left the game with a contusion (bruise) on his lower left leg.
Kris Bryant was 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks and two RBI in three plate appearances before he left the game. Bryant cranked a two-run homer in the second inning, his 24th longball of the season and 50th of his career.
Updated 4:44pm CDT – Kris Bryant is fine. Bryant has a bruise on his left leg. Joe Maddon said during his post-game press conference that Bryant should be fine for tomorrow’s game. Maddon anticipates putting his name in the starting lineup.
Maddon admitted the Cubs have to work on the communication in the outfield. Maddon explained the Cubs will “iron those things out.” Dave Martinez is already addressing the communication between the outfielders.
