Iowa Cubs right-hander Jake Buchanan named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week

Buchanan060716-1Jake Buchanan turned two excellent outings in to a pitcher of the week award. Minor League Baseball announced Monday its players and pitchers of the week (May 30-June 5) and Buchanan became the first I-Cubs’ pitcher this season to take home the weekly honor.

Buchanan tossed six scoreless innings on May 30 against Alburquerque. Buchanan allowed four hits without a walk and struck out two. Buchanan followed up his excellent outing against Alburquerque with a better start against the Redbirds last Saturday night.

Buchanan pitched seven shutout innings and struck out a season-high seven batters. Buchanan surrendered four hits and did not issue a free pass.

Jake Buchanan was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.61 WHIP. Buchanan gave up eight hits and no walks with nine strikeouts in 13 innings.

This is the second pitcher of the week award for Buchanan. He was the Texas League Pitcher of the Week in May 2013 while with Double-A Corpus Christi in the Astros’ system.

Buchanan is the first I-Cubs’ hurler to take home the award since LHP Eric Jokisch last August (Aug. 24-30, 2015).

The Cubs signed Jake Buchanan to a minor league contract on April 3. Buchanan spent the spring with the Astros and was released on March 31. The Astros selected the 26-year old right-hander in the eighth round of the 2010 draft.

Jake Buchanan reported to Triple-A Iowa on April 24. In nine starts with the I-Cubs, Buchanan is 5-3 with a 4.22 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Buchanan has allowed 29 runs, 25 earned, on 56 hits with 10 walks and 39 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings.
