Cubs prospect 2B/OF Ian Happ named Carolina League Player of the Week

Minor League Baseball named its Pitchers and Players of the Week on Monday. And for the second time this season, 2B/OF Ian Happ earned a Player of the Week Award. Happ was named Carolina League Player of the Week (June 13-19).

Happ was 13-for-25 in seven games during the week, batting .520/.571/.960 with six doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBI. He recorded five multi-hit performances, including four in a row to close the week.

Happ has reached in 14 of his last 16 games, slashing .385/.500/.673 with seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, 11 RBI and 12 walks during that span. The surge has propelled him into the league lead in free passes (48), while ranking in a tie for first in games played (69), third in on-base percentage (.410) and fourth in batting average (.296).

Happ was the Cubs’ first-round pick, ninth overall, in 2015 and he’s hitting .296/.410/.475 with 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and a .885 OPS. Happ has driven in 42 runs in 69 games this season. And he’s also swiped 10 bases in 13 attempts.

Ian Happ will represent Myrtle Beach along with RHP Zach Hedges, RHP Trevor Clifton and RHP Jake Stinnett in Tuesday’s California-Carolina League All-Star Game in Lake Elsinore, Calif. First pitch is set for 8:30pm CDT.

Happ also won Carolina League Player of the Week in April (April 18-24). Third baseman Jason Vosler (May 9-15) and first baseman Yasiel Balaguert (May 16-22) took home the award in back-to-back weeks.
