Major League Baseball posted its third update on Wednesday for the NL All-Star balloting. Anthony Rizzo continues to lead the National League in the fan vote. Rizzo has received 1,748,850 votes, a little more than teammate and business partner Kris Bryant (1,629,623), who has received the second most votes in the National League. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Dexter Fowler and Ben Zobrist are within 140,000 votes of one another.
The Cubs starting infield of Anthony Rizzo (1,748,850), Ben Zobrist (1,601,381), Kris Bryant (1,629,623) and Addison Russell (1,170,012) are the leading vote getters at their respective positions as the Cubs look to become only the second team in history to have its infield start an All-Star Game (’63 St. Louis Cardinals).
Dexter Fowler (1,611,833) is ahead of Bryce Harper (1,451,270) in the voting among outfielders. The Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes (1,395,577) is third with Jason Heyward (993,073) gaining ground. Jorge Soler has received the sixth most votes among outfielders.
Yadier Molina (933,300) continues to lead all NL catchers in votes followed by Buster Posey (856,013). Miguel Montero (579,933) is fourth behind the Nationals’ Wilson Ramos (600,181). David Ross did not crack the top five, but has reportedly received the most write-in votes.
The Mets’ Terry Collins will call the shots for the National League in the All-Star Game. And right now, the Cubs will have five position players starting the Midsummer Classic on July 12 at PETCO Park in San Diego.
The Home Run Derby continues to be a hot topic of conversation. Will Major League Baseball create a pitchers only derby? If there is a pitchers only derby will teams allow their No. 1 starters to participate? Kris Bryant has already said if he’s asked to participate in this year’s derby he will politely decline the invitation. And reportedly Anthony Rizzo is leaning in the same direction and not participating this year.
Online voting continues through Thursday, June 30 at 10:59pm CDT. Click on this link to send the deserving Cubs to the 2016 All-Star Game.
The 87th All-Star Game will be held in San Diego at PETCO Park on July 12.
