Veteran catcher Tim Federowicz clears waivers, reporting to Triple-A Iowa

The Cubs announced Monday veteran catcher Tim Federowicz cleared waivers and is reporting to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs designated Federowicz for assignment on June 17 to make room on the active roster for Willson Contreras. The front office hoped at the time Federowicz would clear waivers and the Cubs would be able to keep him in the organization.

Federowicz062716Tim Federowicz is reporting to Triple-A Iowa where he spent a majority of the first month of the season. The Cubs selected Federowicz’s contract from Iowa on April 28 and added him to the active roster to fill in for an injured Miguel Montero.

Federowicz batted .303/.415/.515 in 11 games for Triple-A Iowa with four doubles and a home run for a .930 OPS.

In 13 games with the Cubs, Federowicz hit .192/.222/.269 with two doubles and a .491 OPS.

As is turns out, the Cubs were able to keep the catching depth they were afraid to lose. Tim Federowicz provides the Cubs with good insurance at the Triple-A level.
