Jon Lester, LHP (9-3, 2.10/1.00/3.20) vs. John Lamb, LHP (1-4, 4.78/1.50/5.24)
Jon Lester takes the hill tonight as the Cubs look for back-to-back wins over the Reds.
The Cubs have their work cut out again with lefty John Lamb. Lamb is in the middle of a good stretch and is showing signs of putting things together. The Cubs have very little history with the southpaw. It will be up to Lester tonight to throw strikes and not help the Reds with free passes. But more importantly, keep Billy Hamilton off the bases. Hamilton sets the tone for the Reds when they play the Cubs. Shut down Hamilton and the Reds offense will follow.
Joe Maddon will run out a right-handed heavy lineup tonight. Along with David Ross behind the plate, Maddon should have Javier Baez in the starting nine. Maddon prefers to start Baez at third in games Lester starts. Right-handers have a .818 OPS against John Lamb this season with nine doubles and seven home runs (.277/.347/.471). And left-handers have managed only two extra basehits (one double and one home run) for a .748 OPS (.273/.385/.364).
Tonight all starts with Jon Lester …
Jon Lester’s winning streak came to an end his last time out. Jon Lester put the Cubs in position to beat the Marlins but the offense was stuck in neutral and could not put any runs on the board against Wei-Yin Chen. David Ross hit a solo homer and took Lester off the hook in a game the Cubs lost 4-2. The Cubs had won each of Lester’s previous five starts before running into the juggernaut that is the Marlins.
Jon Lester is 4-0 in his last five starts with a 1.46 ERA and 0.84 WHIP. And on the road this season, Lester is 5-1 in seven starts with a 1.83 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Lester takes on a Reds teams for the third time that he’s struggled with since coming to the Cubs.
Lester is 1-0 in two starts against the Redlegs this season with a 2.77 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. In six career starts, Lester is 2-0 versus the Reds with a 3.38 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. And at Great American Ball Park, Lester is 2-0 in three starts with a 2.14 ERA and 0.71 WHIP.

The Cubs get their second look at lefty John Lamb tonight. Lamb has been inconsistent, at best, this season in the big leagues. Lamb has excellent stuff and profiles as a Major League starting pitcher for many years. Lamb is going through the growing pains most young pitchers go through. Lamb has the stuff to shut the Cubs down.
After holding the Astros to one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings, Lamb gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings to the Padres his last time out.
Lamb has been really good over his last five starts. Lamb is 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA and 1.24 WHIP (13 runs, 10 earned runs, 24 hits, 12 walks, 20 strikeouts, 29 innings). And at Great American Ball Park, Lamb is 0-2 in six starts with a 3.58 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Lamb takes on the Cubs for the second time in his career tonight.
The Cubs beat John Lamb last Oct. 1 at Great American. The Cubs scored five runs on five hits with three walk against the lefty in 4 2/3 innings. Lamb struck out six in a game the Cubs won 5-3.
