Jake Arrieta, RHP (11-2, 1.74/0.98/2.51) vs. Dan Straily, RHP (4-4, 3.83/1.16/4.34)
The Cubs three-city, 11-game road trip continues tonight with the first of three in Cincinnati against the Reds. Joe Maddon gives the ball to Jake Arrieta. And the Cubs could use for Jake Arrieta to shut down the Reds while the offense gets back on track against Dan Straily.
Jake Arrieta said he and Miguel Montero would make the necessary adjustments for him to pitch deeper in games. Arrieta has lacked fastball command and is issuing too many free passes. If the Reds wait out Arrieta it could be another frustrating game for the Cubs.
Jake Arrieta makes his first start in Cincinnati since he no-hit the Reds back on April 21. The Reds have had this game circled on the calendar for a while. Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and company are looking for a little payback.
The Cubs are 6-1 in the first seven games of the season series with the Reds.
After tonight’s matchup of Jake Arrieta and Dan Straily, the Cubs will have to deal with two very talented lefties on Tuesday (6:05pm CDT) and Wednesday (11:35am CDT). Jon Lester is scheduled to face John Lamb in the middle game. The series wraps up with Kyle Hendricks taking on Cody Reed.
Tonight all starts with Jake Arrieta …
The Cubs could really use for Jake Arrieta to return to being Jake Arrieta tonight. Not necessarily the one that had an historic run, but the Arrieta that pitches six to seven innings and doesn’t walk more than one batter would be more than welcome.
Arrieta has not been sharp, it doesn’t matter what the numbers say. Arrieta hasn’t passed the eye test of late. Arrieta said he and Miguel Montero will make an adjustment before tonight’s start and he will start getting back on track.
Jake Arrieta lost for the second time in four starts his last time out. More importantly, the Cubs are 2-3 in his last five starts. A pitcher’s win-loss record is meaningless. A team’s win-loss record on the day a pitchers starts is obviously important. After the bad trip to Miami, the Cubs need for Arrieta to step it up tonight.
Over his last four starts, Arrieta is 2-2 with a 2.35 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. And on the road this season, Arrieta is 7-0 in seven starts with a 1.84 ERA and 0.80 WHIP.
Jake Arrieta makes his second start of the season against the Reds tonight. And the first one was pretty, pretty, pretty good. Arrieta no-hit the Reds at Great American while walking four and striking out six in nine excellent innings.
In six career starts against the Reds, Arrieta is 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA and 0.82 WHIP … at Great American, Arrieta owns a 2-1 mark in three starts with a 3.79 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.
Reds Career Numbers against Jake Arrieta
- Zack Cozart: 4-for-16 with one double
- Billy Hamilton: 3-for-12 with one double and three walks
- Jay Bruce: 2-for-13 with one double and one walk
- Brandon Phillips: 4-for-14 with two doubles
- Joey Votto: 2-for-11 with one double and one walk
- Eugenio Suarez: 0-for-3 with one walk
- Adam Duvall: 0-for-3
- Tucker Barnhart: 0-for-2
Dan Straily has been more than serviceable for the Reds this season. And some within the game think the Reds could flip Straily to a team looking to add pitching before the deadline. Straily was in the middle of a good run before the Braves rocked him. Straily did not fare much better his last time out against the Rangers.
After posting a 3-1 record in six starts in May with a 3.47 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, Straily is 1-2 in his last four starts with a 4.81 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Straily has allowed 13 runs on 17 hits with 10 walks and 16 strikeouts in his last 24 1/3 innings.
Dan Straily faces his former team for the third time on the season. Straily does not have a decision in two appearances, one start, against the Cubs. Straily has allowed five runs on six hits with five walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings (6.43 ERA, 1.57 WHIP).

- Ben Zobrist: 0-for-4
