Kyle Hendricks, RHP (4-6, 3.05/1.00/3.29) vs. Jameson Taillon, RHP (1-0, 1.93/0.78/3.77)
It’s the Cubs and Pirates in the Game of the World from Wrigley Field. The Cubs look to complete the three-game sweep and finish off the Pirates under the lights behind Kyle Hendricks.
The Cubs have a chance to push the Pirates even further down the standings with a win tonight. The Pirates are reeling. Clint Hurdle’s team is two games under .500 and has beaten the Cubs once this season in eight tries. Josh Harrison hasn’t been able to sing ‘No Cubs No’ this weekend. And now it is up to rookie right-hander Jameson Taillon in his third big league start to snap the Pirates’ skid.
Jameson Taillon has the ability to shut the Cubs down tonight. Taillon projects as a true No. 1, if not an ace. Taillon has excellent stuff. It will be interesting to see how Joe Maddon structures his lineup, especially if Dexter Fowler is out as expected. Maddon hasn’t seen Taillon pitch yet. Based on the incredibly small sample size in the majors, Maddon’s lineup should lean to the left. Right-handers on the Mets have hit .077/.200/.077 with a .277 OPS against him while the Mets’ left-handers hit .226/.265/.387 with a .652 OPS. This Taillon’s first big league start against a team other than the Metropolitans.
Tonight all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks more than held his own with Max Scherzer his last time out. Hendricks went pitch for pitch with Scherzer for a majority of the first five innings of the game. Hendricks struck out Ryan Zimmerman to end the fifth with the bases loaded and had nothing left when he went back for the sixth inning. The Nationals scored three runs and Hendricks took the loss in a 4-1 final score.
Hendricks is 1-2 in his last three starts with a 3.44 ERA and 1.09 WHIP and should benefit from being back at Wrigley tonight. Hendricks is 3-1 in six starts at the old ballyard this season with a 1.99 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. In 40 2/3 innings, Hendricks has allowed 11 runs, nine earned, on 26 hits with five walks and 34 strikeouts.
Kyle Hendricks faces the Pirates for the first time on the season tonight. In four career starts against the Bucs, Hendricks is 0-1 with a 6.63 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. The Pirates have pretty much had their way with him.
Pirates Career Numbers against Kyle Hendricks
- Gregory Polanco: 4-for-11 with one double and one home run
- Starling Marte: 1-for-6 with two walks
- Josh Harrison: 2-for-7 with one double
- Jordy Mercer: 3-for-7
- Jung Ho Kang: 1-for-5 with one walk
- Andrew McCutchen: 1-for-5 with one walk
- Chris Stewart: 0-for-4
- Sean Rodriguez: 1-for-2 with one home run
- Erik Kratz: 0-for-1
The Cubs get their first look Jameson Taillon. And in two starts in the big leagues, Taillon has lived up to all the hype.
After putting together a quality start in his Major League debut against the Mets, Jameson Taillon faced the New Yorkers again six days later and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Taillon made the right adjustments and allowed just two hits in eight shutout innings.
Tonight will be the first time he’s faced a team other than the Mets in the majors.
Jameson Taillon put up impressive numbers in the minors before the Pirates finally called him up this season. The 24-year old right hander was 4-2 in 10 starts with Triple-A Indianapolis with a 2.04 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. After missing two season due to Tommy John surgery, Taillon struck out 61 batters in 61 2/3 innings while allowing 14 runs on 44 hits with only six walks.
The Cubs will have their hands full with the dynamic young right-hander tonight.
