Jon Lester, LHP (6-3, 2.29/1.01/3.22) vs. Adam Morgan, LHP (1-4, 7.07/1.51/5.34)
The Cubs kick-off a nine-game, three-city road trip tonight with the first of three in Philadelphia. The Cubs have three games in Atlanta starting on Friday night after Thursday’s off-day. And the trip concludes early next week with three against Bryce Harper and the Nationals.
The Cubs swept the series with the Phillies at Wrigley (May 27-29) and will look to keep on-track against a team that is 2-8 in its last 10 games and 15-14 at home. The Cubs split the four games in Philly last season and anything less than a series victory this time around would be a disappointment for Joe Maddon’s team.
After tonight’s match-up of southpaws Jon Lester and Adam Morgan, Kyle Hendricks is scheduled to face Jerad Eickhoff on Tuesday night. The series and season series with the Phillies concludes Wednesday, weather permitting, with John Lackey squaring off against Vince Velasquez. The Cubs will not see the Phillies again this year after Wednesday but have yet to play a single game against the Mets or Marlins this season.
Tonight all starts with Jon Lester …
Jon Lester is coming off a gem against the Dodgers. Lester tossed his first complete game of the season while giving up one run on four hits with no walks. Lester tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts, the third time in 11 starts he’s struck out 10 batters this season.
Because of Jake Arrieta and the dud in San Francisco, Lester’s performance this season has basically been overlooked. The Cubs need for Lester to pitch the way he has throughout the season.
Jon Lester is 3-1 in four road starts this season with a 2.82 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Lester has allowed seven runs on 23 hits with six walks and 14 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings outside of Wrigley Field.
Lester beat the Phillies on May 27 at Wrigley. Lester was charged with two runs, one earned, on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. The one earned run Lester was charged with scored after he left the game.
For his career, Jon Lester is 5-0 in seven starts against the Phillies with a 1.71 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. And at Citizens Bank Park, Lester is 3-0 in four starts with a 1.67 ERA and 0.89 WHIP.

The Cubs get their second look of the year at Adam Morgan. And it will be interesting to see which adjustments work tonight. The Cubs scored six runs on eight hits (three homers) against Morgan in four innings. Morgan struggled against the Nationals and hasn’t had a good outing against a team not from Atlanta since May 4.
Adam Morgan has not pitched to expectations in his home park this season. Morgan is 0-3 in four starts with a 7.84 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. Morgan has allowed 18 runs on 26 hits (four home runs) with six walks and 15 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings.
