Kyle Hendricks, RHP (3-4, 2.93/0.97/2.78) vs. Julio Urias, LHP (0-0, 10.13/3.37/5.37)
The Cubs and Dodgers wrap up the four-game series this afternoon. And Joe Maddon sends Kyle Hendricks to the bump with a chance to win the series.
The Cubs are 2-1 in the first three with the Dodgers and 5-1 on the current homestand with four games left before they hit the road again. The Cubs will not see the Dodgers again until late August (Aug. 26-28) at Dodger Stadium.
Ben Zobrist is supposed to get a much needed and well-deserved day off today. Javier Baez should get the start at second base with Kris Bryant at third base and Jorge Soler in left field.
Joe Maddon will have a short bullpen today. Hector Rondon is unavailable. Rondon is dealing with a stiff back and is expected to be sidelined for at least today’s game and likely Friday. With Jon Lester completing nine, Maddon’s other six relievers should be available today.
The Cubs will get their first look at 19-year old Julio Urias. Kenta Maeda was scheduled for today’s game but the Dodgers pushed him to Friday in order to give him a little more time after taking a comebacker in the right hand during his last start.
With Julio Urias starting, Fernando Mania II will hit Wrigley Field today. Urias makes his second big league start this afternoon. Urias is an incredible talent that is dealing with an incredible amount of hype. Many project Urias to be a true ace, not just a No. 1 or a top of the rotation starter. Urias has great stuff and the ability to shut the Cubs down today. The Cubs must make sure the teenager doesn’t have a chance to get comfortable on the mound at Wrigley Field.
Today all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
The last time out Kyle Hendricks put together one of the two best starts of his career. The results were great with a complete game, five-hitter in which he was charged with one run. Hendricks struck out seven and did not issue a walk. What was more encouraging was Hendricks’ command and that he pitched ahead in the count throughout the game.
Hendricks is 2-2 in his last five starts with a 2.23 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. Hendricks has allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 21 hits with eight walks and 26 strikeouts in his last 32 1/3 innings.
At Wrigley this season, Hendricks is 2-1 in five starts with a 1.93 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. And he makes his third career start against the Dodgers this afternoon. Kyle Hendricks is 1-1 in two starts with a 3.75 ERA and 0.83 WHIP.

Julio Urias makes the second start of his big league career today. The 19-year old lefty was called up last week and made his Major League debut at Citi Field against the Mets. Urias struggled with his command and lasted just 2 2/3 innings. Urias showed signs of being the incredible pitcher that everyone around the game says he will be in the very near future.
Urias gave up three runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts to the Mets. Urias made 81 pitches, 42 for strikes.
This afternoon will be the Cubs first look at Julio Urias in a Major League ballgame.
