Cubs agree to terms with seventh round draft pick, catcher Michael Cruz
According to a report from Jonathan Mayo, the Cubs have agreed to terms with C Michael Cruz. The Cubs selected Cruz in the seventh round of last week’s draft. Mayo reported the Cubs inked Cruz for $75,000.
The Cubs used seven of the first eight picks in last week’s draft on pitchers. Michael Cruz was the only position player taken by the Cubs in the first 16 rounds, 14 picks.
The Cubs reportedly signed Cruz to an under slot bonus of $75,000. The Cubs were allotted $186,000 for its seventh round pick.
The Cubs selected catcher Michael Cruz in Round Seven with pick No. 224 out of Bethune-Cookman University (Junior). The left-handed hitter is 5-foot-11, 210 pounds and turned 20 in January (Jan. 13, 1996).
In 56 games this season, Cruz batted .325/.461/.605 with six doubles, a triple and 16 home runs for a 1.066 OPS. Cruz was hit by a pitch 16 times and had 38 walks with 25 strikeouts in 200 at bats.
Zack Short, the Cubs 17th round pick, told Sal Interdonato of the Times-Herald Record last Saturday that he would be signing soon and likely reporting to Short-Season A Eugene.
The Cubs signing bonus pool for the first 10 rounds of this year’s draft is $2,245,100 million. If the Cubs sign a player in rounds 11-40 for more than $100,000, the excess is counted against the team’s bonus pool. If the Cubs draft a player in the first 10 rounds they are unable sign, the assigned slot value is removed from their bonus pool allotment.
If the Cubs exceed its draft bonus pool by five percent, they will pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. If the Cubs exceed its draft bonus pool by five to 10 percent, the penalty would be a 75 percent tax on the overage and the loss of next year’s first round pick. If the Cubs were to exceed its draft bonus pool by 10 to 15 percent, there would be a 100 percent tax on the overage and the front office would forfeit the team’s first and second round pick in the 2017 draft. If the Cubs were to spend more than 15 percent of its bonus pool, the penalty is a 100 percent tax on the overage and two future first-round picks.
Deadline for teams to sign 2016 draft picks is July 15.
