With the deadline to sign 2016 draft picks still a couple of weeks away, the Cubs have signed five of the team’s first eight picks in last month’s draft.
According to Jim Callis, the Cubs signed RHP Tyson Miller, the fourth round pick out of Cal-Baptist. The Cubs signed Miller for $500,000, slightly above the fourth round slot allotment of $429,700.
Miller’s bonus is the first reported over-slot signing for the Cubs of this draft class.
Tyson Miller went 9-3 with a 2.27 ERA (27 earned runs in 107 innings), two complete games, one shutout and one save in 16 games (15 starts) for Cal Baptist this season. Miller pitched for Brewster in the Cape Cod League in 2015, in which he recorded a 1.44 ERA (four earned runs in 25 innings) and a 0.88 WHIP. Miller was recommended by area scout Alex Lontayo.
Miller throws a lot of strikes with a 91-93 mph fastball that has touched 96 mph. Miller is a groundball pitcher that features an above-average slider in the low-80s. Miller’s changeup needs work but has the makings of an average pitch. Miller threw in the mid-80s in high school according to Baseball America. And he could “still have a bit more left in the tank.” MLB.com agrees with Baseball America that Miller has “the potential for more once he gets into a player development system.”
The Cubs have reportedly signed sixth round pick RHP Chad Hockin ($241,000) to slot value and seventh round pick C Michael Cruz ($75,000), eighth round pick RHP Stephen Ridings ($120,000) and ninth round pick RHP Duncan Robinson ($30,000) to under slot bonuses.
According to Baseball America, the Cubs have also signed RHP Holden Cammack (16th round), RHP Matt Swarmer (19th round), LHP Wyatt Short (13th round), C Sam Tidaback (21st round) and OF Connor Myers (27th round). The Cubs have signed SS Zack Short (17th round) and SS Trent Giambrone (25th round). The amounts of those signing bonuses have not surfaced yet.
Zack Short and Michael Cruz have played in games for the AZL Cubs. Short is 2-for-5 in two games. Cruz is 4-for-17 with a double in five games.
Trent Giambrone reported to Short-Season Class-A Eugene and hit the first homer of his pro career Wednesday. Giambrone is 3-for-8 in two games with a double and a home run.
Cubs 2016 First-Year Player Draft
The Cubs signing bonus pool for the first 10 rounds of this year’s draft is $2,245,100 million. If the Cubs sign a player in rounds 11-40 for more than $100,000, the excess is counted against the team’s bonus pool. If the Cubs draft a player in the first 10 rounds they are unable sign, the assigned slot value is removed from their bonus pool allotment.
If the Cubs exceed its draft bonus pool by five percent, they will pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. If the Cubs exceed its draft bonus pool by five to 10 percent, the penalty would be a 75 percent tax on the overage and the loss of next year’s first round pick. If the Cubs were to exceed its draft bonus pool by 10 to 15 percent, there would be a 100 percent tax on the overage and the front office would forfeit the team’s first and second round pick in the 2017 draft. If the Cubs were to spend more than 15 percent of its bonus pool, the penalty is a 100 percent tax on the overage and two future first-round picks.
Deadline for teams to sign 2016 draft picks is July 15.
