Cubs prospect Eloy Jimenez hits game-tying three-run homer in Midwest League All-Star Game
Outfielder Eloy Jimenez had a very good first half for the South Bend Cubs and earned a trip to the Midwest League All-Star Game. Jimenez delivered Tuesday night under the bright lights. Jimenez smacked a game-tying three-run homer in the ninth inning. And the East squad went on to defeat the West 11-10 in Cedar Rapids.
Eloy Jimenez went 1-for-5 on the night with the lone hit being a rather big one, the three-run shot. Jimenez drove in four runs and received the Top Star Award for the game. Teammate Donnie Dewees was 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and RBI in the game. Dewees was on base when Jimenez went yard.
Indians’ prospect Willi Castro drove in the game winner with a single to right field.
As it turns out, Jimenez told Castro he was going to hit the home run and that the East squad would go on to win the game. Jimenez made the bold prediction before the ninth inning and delivered. Jimenez drove in another run with a groundout earlier in the game.
The 19-year old outfielder is tearing up the Midwest League.
In 65 games, Eloy Jimenez has hit .341/.379/.535 with 24 doubles, a triple and eight home runs for a .914 OPS. Jimenez has 16 walks and 62 strikeouts in 258 at-bats. And he started the season hitting only .284/.326/.420 with a .746 OPS in 20 games.
Jimenez was 19-for-41 in the 10 games leading up to the break.
Eloy Jimenez is second in the Midwest League in batting average (.341), first in slugging (.535), first in OPS (.914), first in hits (88), first in doubles (24), third in home runs (8), third in RBI (45) and first in total bases (138).
Eloy Jimenez played in 57 games for Short-Season Class-A Eugene a year ago. This is his first year of full-season baseball.
