Cubs option left-handed reliever Gerardo Concepcion to Triple-A Iowa
According to the official transactions pages on Cubs.com and MiLB.com’s Pacific Coast League, LHP Gerardo Concepcion had been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs have not announced that Concepcion has been sent down or the corresponding roster move.
Joe Maddon was not happy with his bullpen following Sunday’s loss in Miami. It appears there will be changes before the Cubs begin the three-game series with the Reds on Monday (6:10pm CDT).
The Cubs were carrying a 13-man pitching staff (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players on the 25-man active roster. With the team being in the middle of 24 games in 24 days, there is no reason to think a reliever will not be called up.
The Cubs’ 40-man roster currently stands at 39 players. RHP Dallas Beeler and RHP Aaron Brooks are on rehab assignments with Triple-A Iowa. LHP Giovanni Soto and RHP R.J. Alvarez are the only two other pitchers currently on the 40-man roster that are not on a disabled list (major or minor) or currently in the big leagues.
Gerardo Concepcion appeared in his third game Sunday. Concepcion was charged with one run on one hit in a third of an inning. Concepcion has given up one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings with a walk and two strikeouts (3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP). Concepcion has allowed four of five inherited runners to score.
There could be several roster moves announced Monday … stay tuned.
