Neil Ramirez placed on bereavement list – Spencer Patton recalled from Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs announced two roster moves prior to Thursday’s opener with the Nationals. RHP Neil Ramirez was placed on the bereavement list due to a death in his family. The Cubs recalled RHP Spencer Patton from Triple-A Iowa to fill Ramirez’s spot on the active roster and in the bullpen.
Spencer Patton, who will wear uniform No. 40, will be available for the Cubs for Thursday’s opener of the four-game series against the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field.
Neil Ramirez has appeared in six games and allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts (4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 4.90 FIP).
Spencer Patton has continued with Iowa what he started in the spring during his time in big league camp. Patton has been lights out for Marty Pevey this season in 10 games.
Patton has given up five hits and four walks with 17 strikeouts over 10 innings and no runs (0.00 ERA, 0.90 WHIP). Patton has been closing for the I-Cubs and has four saves in the nine games he has finished. Patton hasn’t been perfect but he’s been able to pitch out of trouble the few times he’s put runners on base.
Neil Ramirez may spend three to seven days on the bereavement list. If Ramirez requires more than seven days, by rule, the Cubs would have to place him on the restricted list.
Spencer Patton is on the 40-man roster and is on an optional assignment for the 2016 season.
