Kyle Hendricks, RHP (2-3, 3.51/1.04/2.72) vs. Madison Bumgarner, LHP (5-2, 2.45/1.17/3.02)
The Cubs conclude the series with the Giants tonight and give the ball to Kyle Hendricks in the rubber game. The Cubs thumped the Giants in the opener Friday night 8-1 behind Jake Arrieta and three home runs. Jon Lester had a really bad outing in Saturday’s 5-3 loss. The offense could not dig out of the early hole despite Kris Bryant and Dexter Fowler hitting longballs.
The Cubs have the tough task of facing Madison Bumgarner tonight. And Joe Maddon will ask Hendricks to keep the Giants off the board while his teammates attempt to put runs on the board.
Kyle Hendricks had his best game in the majors almost a year ago to the day. Hendricks has pitched extremely well in the State of California. Last May 21, Hendricks dominated the Padres in San Diego. Hendricks completed his first, and only, game and allowed just five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Maddon is running out a right-handed heavy lineup as would be expected with the Giants’ southpaw on the mound.
Cubs starting lineup: Dexter Fowler CF, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Kris Bryant 3B, Ben Zobrist 2B, Jorge Soler LF, Addison Russell SS, Matt Szczur RF, David Ross C, Kyle Hendricks P
Tonight starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks was roughed up his last time out against the Brewers. The Cubs could really use the Kyle Hendricks that faced the Nationals tonight. After a sensational outing against the Nationals, Hendricks put together a very good start against the Padres. Hendricks allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. The Cubs ended up losing to the Friars 7-4 but Hendricks did his job.
Hendricks allowed four runs on five hits to the Brewers in 5 1/3 innings five days ago in a 4-2 loss in Milwaukee. If that version of Kyle Hendricks shows up tonight, the final line will look a lot worse.
Hendricks is 1-1 in his last three starts with a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. But on the road this season, Hendricks is 2-1 in three starts with a 5.19 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.
Kyle Hendricks makes his third career start against the Giants tonight. Hendricks is 1-1 in the first two with a 5.56 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Hendricks faced the Giants one time a year ago. Hendricks gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The Cubs won the game 8-6 and Hendricks picked up the ‘W.’
