Cubs sign RHP Nick Sarianides to a Minor League contract
According to Baseball America, the Cubs have added RHP Nick Sarianides to the organization. Sarianides was signed to a minor league contract after he was released by the Diamondbacks on May 5.
Nick Sarianides appeared in eight games for Double-A Mobile in the Southern League and allowed seven runs, five earned, on 15 hits with 11 walks and five strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings (3.65 ERA, 2.10 WHIP). Sarianides has not pitched above the Double-A level. Sarianides spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons in the Diamondbacks system.
The Indians selected the 26-year old right-hander in the 28th round of the 2009 draft.
Sarianides has spent time in affiliated ball in the Indians and Diamondbacks’ systems and Independent ball. Over the six seasons with the Indians and Diamondbacks, Sarianides posted an 18-15 record in 175 games, all in relief, with 33 saves, a 3.38 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Sarianides made four starts (Rockford RiverHawks, 2012) among his 66 games in Independent ball.
Nick Sarianides pitched in four Cactus League games this past spring. Sarianides was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. He gave up one hit with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Cubs should assign Sarianides to Double-A Tennessee based on where he last pitched in the Diamondbacks system.
