Outfielder Donnie Dewees, the Cubs second round pick in last June’s Draft, is making an impact for the South Bend Cubs.
Dewees batted third and played center field Thursday in a 5-3 loss to Great Lakes. Dewees went 0-for-3 with a walk but he extended his on-base streak to nine games. Dewees has cooled off somewhat over his last 15 games despite reaching base in nine straight.
Dewees hit his first home run of the season on May 10 and drove in a career-high six runs on May 13.
Defensively, Dewees has lined up 29 times in center field and played six games in left field.
Over his first 21 games, Dewees batted .345/.394/.583 with a .977 OPS. And for the season, the left-hander is hitting .296/.348/.493 with nine doubles, eight triples and a home run for a .841 OPS. Dewees has 28 RBI and 13 walks with 20 strikeouts in 142 at bats. And on the bases, Dewees is 9-for-11 on the season.
Donnie Dewees is second in the Midwest League in total bases (70) behind teammate Eloy Jimenez. Dewees leads the league in triples (8) and extra basehits (18). Dewees is third in the league in runs scored (26) and tied for first in RBI (28).
