What a Bum-mer – Giants 1, Cubs 0

Game Forty-Two – Cubs 0, Giants 1

WP – Madison Bumgarner (6-2) LP – Kyle Hendricks (2-4) Save – Santiago Casilla (12)

Kyle Hendricks gave up one run on a double by Madison Bumgarner in 5 1/3 innings. But the Cubs managed only three hits, all singles off Bumgarner, and were shutout for the third time this season. The Cubs were not able to bounce back from Saturday’s loss and dropped another series in San Francisco to the Giants.

The Cubs had Madison Bumgarner on the ropes in the first inning. The Cubs loaded the bases with two outs after Kris Bryant (0-for-3 with a HBP) was hit by a pitch, Ben Zobrist (1-for-4) singled and Jorge Soler (0-for-3 with a walk) walked. Addison Russell (0-for-4) was caught looking at a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. Russell struck out four times Sunday night. And the Cubs managed just two other hits the rest of the game.

Kyle Hendricks went toe-to-toe with Madison Bumgarner and held his own. Hendricks made two mistakes that cost him a run. Hendricks issued a leadoff walk to Gregor Blanco in the fifth inning. Hendricks missed his spot badly on a 1-2 offering to Madison Bumgarner. Blanco was running with the pitch that Bumgarner smoked over Soler’s head. Blanco scored easily on Bumgarner’s double, the only run in the game.

Kyle Hendricks surrendered one run on three hits with three walks and a strikeout. Hendricks made 85 pitches, 50 for strikes, in 5 1/3 innings.

Travis Wood kept the Giants from adding on for 1 2/3 innings and Pedro Strop hung a zero on the board in the eighth inning.

The Cubs squared up several balls that the Giants either scooped up or made unbelievable falling catches that kept Bumgarner and the bullpen out of trouble.

Absolutely nothing bounced the Cubs way over the last two days.

With Sunday’s loss, the Cubs slipped to 29-13 on the season.

• Box Score from Yahoo Sports

The Cubs open a three-game series in St. Louis on Monday night (7:15pm CDT). John Lackey is scheduled to face Adam Wainwright in game one of round two with the Cardinals.
