Kyle Hendricks (1-0, 2.70/0.75/2.12) vs. Chad Bettis (1-0, 4.38/1.29/4.63)
It’s Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball as all 30 teams will honor the man that broke the color barrier. The impact Mr. Robinson made is immeasurable and goes well beyond the field or the game.
The Cubs welcome the Colorado Rockies to Wrigley Field today for the first of a three-game weekend series. Trevor Story, Carlos Gonzalez, Nolan Arenado, D.J. LeMahieu and the high-powered Rockies offense lead the National League in batting average (.300), slugging percentage (.591) and OPS (.947).
Joe Maddon will send Kyle Hendricks, Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester to the hill over the next three days and not one single pitcher on the staff should throw Trevor Story a fastball this weekend. The Cubs will see three starters in Chad Bettis, Christian Bergman and Tyler Chatwood the players have very little, if any, history with in the majors.
The Cubs were 4-2 in the six games with the Rockies last season.
Chad Bettis gets the ball from Walt Weiss and makes his first start against the Cubs today. Over his career, right-handers have hit .309/.360/.515/.875 against him while left-handers have batted .274/.353/.425/.777. In two starts this season, lefties (.333/.333/.400/.733) have hit better than righties (.242/.316/.485/.801).
The Cubs have three day games in a row before hitting the road for seven games in St. Louis and Cincinnati.
The first day game of the season at Wrigley Field all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks was very good in Phoenix last Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Hendricks worked quickly and kept the ball down in the zone, inducing groundballs after groundballs. Hendricks pitched into the seventh inning and the third time through the D-Backs’ lineup. Hendricks allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
At Wrigley last season, Hendricks was 2-3 in 15 starts with a 3.38 ERA and 1.07 WHIP (32 runs, 71 hits, 21 walks, 86 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings) and he made two starts against the Rockies.
Kyle Hendricks struggled against the Rockies in the two games last season. Hendricks allowed nine runs on 15 hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings … and only some of the damage was done at Coors Field (five runs, eight hits, one walks, three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings).
Today is Hendricks fourth career start against the Rockies. Hendricks is 1-0 in the first three with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.
