Jake Arrieta (1-0, 0.00/0.42/2.07) vs. Shelby Miller (0-0, 9.00/1.50/9.69)
It is getaway day in Phoenix and the finale of the six-game road trip. Jake Arrieta makes his second start of the season in the last of four with the Diamondbacks. And a win today would give the Cubs their second straight series victory to begin the season.
The Cubs fly to Chicago following today’s game to prepare for the home opener on Monday night with the Reds. The players will get a chance to see the new clubhouse on the eve of the first game of the season at Wrigley Field.
But first things first, the Cubs have to figure out Shelby Miller this afternoon at Chase Field. Look for Joe Maddon to load his lineup with lefties. Miller limited right-handers to a .214/.294/.300 line with a .594 OPS last season while left-handers batted .262/.321/.411 against him with a .732 OPS. Miller’s career splits are in line with how teams hit against him last season.
Today all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta is coming off a sensational outing on Opening Night in Anaheim. Arrieta faced two over the minimum in seven shutout innings. Arrieta gave up two hits with a walk and struck out six. The Cubs will ask Arrieta for a similar performance today against the Diamondbacks.
Arrieta was 13-1 in 18 road starts last season with a 1.60 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. And he faced the Diamondbacks both at Chase Field and Wrigley last year.
One of Arrieta’s worst starts of the season happened at Chase Field. Arrieta was charged with six runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in six innings. Arrieta kept the D-Backs in check at Wrigley in September. Arrieta was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 0.92 WHIP versus the Snakes last season.
Jake Arrieta is 1-1 in three career starts against the Diamondbacks with a 2.61 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. And at wonderful Chase Field, 0-1 in two starts with a 4.26 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

The Cubs get their first look at Shelby Miller in a Diamondbacks jersey. The front office tried to acquire the former Cardinals right hander from the Braves before Tony LaRussa and Dave Stewart handed over a rather large package of prospects for him.
Miller struggled his first time out this season. In six innings against the Rockies, Miller was charged with six runs, all earned, on eight hits. Three of the eight left the yard and he walked a batter while striking out two.
Shelby Miller owned the Cubs during his time with the Cardinals. Miller makes his seventh career start against the Cubs today. Miller is 1-2 in seven games, six starts, with a 2.83 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.
