Kyle Hendricks (0-0, 4.50, 1.00) vs. Clayton Kershaw (1-0, 0.00, 1.00)
The Cubs return to the field today behind Kyle Hendricks as the young right hander makes his first start of the spring.
Travis Wood is scheduled to pitch after Hendricks. It will be interesting to see how the Cubs start using the pitchers they are supposed to be stretching out. The next step for Hendricks and Wood would be to pitch three innings. The Cubs have a lot of pitchers in camp on the spring roster that also have to get their work in.
The Cubs have the pleasure of facing Clayton Kershaw today, the first of back-to-back former Cy Young award winners. Jake Arrieta takes on Corey Kluber on Wednesday at Sloan Park.
This afternoon all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks makes his first start of the spring and second appearance in the Cactus League. Hendricks followed Wood to the hill in the opener against the Brewers on March 3. Hendricks completed two innings and gave up one run on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Hendricks looked good in the opener. And he takes the next step in keeping his spot in the rotation this afternoon.
Travis Wood took the loss against the Brewers after getting charged with one run on one hit without a walk and two strikeouts in two innings. Wood did not get any help from his defense in the first inning. The miscues led to the early run against Wood.
Clayton Kershaw allowed just one hit over two innings to the White Sox in his first outing of the spring. Kershaw walked one and struck out two. Kershaw will likely take the first three innings this afternoon as he prepares for his Opening Day start.
