Kyle Schwarber Looks to Return Saturday to Cubs Lineup
Kyle Schwarber spoke with Bruce Levine and Carrie Muskat on Friday morning. Schwarber downplayed the injury to his left knee that caused him to leave Thursday’s game in the third inning.
Schwarber told Levine and Muskat he is day-to-day and hopes to be back in the lineup on Saturday. The Cubs play two exhibition games Saturday, one against the White Sox at Sloan Park in the afternoon (2:05pm CST), the other against the Dodgers under the lights in Glendale (8:05pm CST).
Schwarber felt something in his left knee after making a throw to the plate in the second inning. Schwarber hit in the third inning before taking himself out of the game.
Bruce Levine reported Thursday night that Schwarber could miss a week of games. That is not the timeframe Schwarber is working with. He doesn’t think he will be out of the lineup for an extended period.
Schwarber said to Carrie Muskat, “It was obviously nothing significant. You know me, if I can still play, I’m going to play. I felt it wasn’t the smart thing to do right then. Luckily we caught it early. We’ll give it a day to rest and see what it brings tomorrow and if I can get in there tomorrow, I’ll be in there.”
If Schwarber is in one of Saturday’s lineups it will not be as a designated hitter according to the report.
Updated 10:49am CST – Kyle Schwarber participated in all of the team’s drills during Friday morning’s practice.
Updated 11:18am CST – The Cubs are “not heavily concerned” about Kyle Schwarber according to reports from Gordon Wittenmyer and Paul Sullivan. Joe Maddon said Schwarber will not play in games for two day. The earliest he will return is Sunday.
