Joe Maddon ran out a majority of his every day lineup Thursday for the first time this spring. It was good to see the Cubs regulars on the field together, even for a Spring Training game in mid-March.
The Cubs played good defense behind Jason Hammel. Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell were in the infield along with Munenori Kawasaki. Ben Zobrist was scratched from the lineup because of an ingrown toenail.
Jason Heyward was in right, Dexter Fowler in center and Jorge Soler was in left with Kyle Schwarber behind the plate. It was interesting to see Jean Segura not test Heyward, even in a Spring Training game. On a single to right in the first inning, Segura stopped at second base.
The Cubs beat the Diamondbacks 15-4. Final score aside, the Cubs played a complete game Thursday in the field and at the plate. Here are highlights from the Cactus League contest.
Dexter Fowler led off the bottom of the first with a triple into the right field corner. The Cubs were down 1-0 when Fowler stepped in. Fowler tied the game after Jean Segura threw the ball in the stands. Fowler recorded a ‘Little League Home Run.’
Jason Heyward worked a free pass after Fowler tripled and scored. Heyward swiped second and scored the go-ahead run on a Kris Bryant double.
Kris Bryant delivered the go-ahead hit with Heyward at second.
Kyle Schwarber plated Bryant with a triple to right center and showed off his wheels as he lumbered around the bases.
And if anyone on the team needed a hit, it was Jorge Soler. Prior to Thursday, Soler had one hit. He collected two with a two-run homer in the first and a run scoring double in the third.
With Anthony Rizzo at second and Kyle Schwarber at first after a pair of walks in the third inning, Jorge Soler worked a full count against Archie Bradley. Soler smoked a grounder back up the middle that ate up Jean Segura. Soler was credited with a double and a RBI … and ended Archie Bradley’s night.
Jason Heyward tripled to center with one out in the fourth and plated minor leaguer Victor Caratini.
The Cubs struggled with getting runners in from third with less than two outs last season. Anthony Rizzo followed Heyward’s triple with a sac fly to center.
Munenori Kawasaki doubled in a run in the fifth and was on base when Tim Federowicz picked up a rare triple.
And John Andreoli capped the scoring on the night with a two-run homer to left … his fourth longball in the Cactus League.
