Sports Illustrated unveiled Tuesday four covers for the magazine’s annual baseball preview. And the Cubs, the team many have picked to be the last team standing at the end of the year, is featured on one of the four regional covers.
Sports Illustrated did not predict the Cubs to win it all this season. SI thinks the Cubs will be the champs in the NL Central and represent the Senior Circuit in the Fall Classic. As for reaching the ultimate goal, not this year for the Cubs, Sports Illustrated has the Houston Astros winning The Series.
The Astros, Mets and Giants don the other three covers. SI predicted the Mets will take the NL East. And the Giants will be one of the Wild Card teams, finishing second to the Dodgers in the West.
Maddon said, “Well, you know, just get us there. SI, please just get is there. I’d be happy with that.”
“It’s just part of the game, man. I’m sure they’ve been right on occasion. They’ve probably been wrong more than they’ve been right. But everybody’s wrong more than they’re right when it comes down to predicting who’s going to be where.”
“I don’t put a whole lot of emphasis on any of that. I think it’s great for the organization. Just like it’s great for the Rays now to be participating in the game in Cuba with the stage you got there. When you’re presented on the cover of Sports Illustrated, obviously, it’s a wonderful stage for us. But it doesn’t mean anything other than it’s good reading and great photography.”
If the team does not reach its goals this season it will not be because of an inanimate object. The journey that is the 162-game regular season begins on April 4.
