Cubs Sign OF Shane Victorino to Minor League Contract with Spring Training Invite

February 26, 2016 9:30 am By Neil 3 Comments

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have signed veteran outfielder Shane Victorino to a minor league contract that includes a non-roster invite to Spring Training.

Victorino022616With the addition of Victorino, the Cubs’ Spring Training roster stands at 63 players, a full 40-man roster and 23 non-roster invitees.

Shane Victorino says he’s healthy and ready to play this season. Victorino played in only 71 games last year for the Red Sox and Angels and a total of 101 games since 2013 when he helped Boston win the World Series.

Victorino will see a lot of familiar faces in Cubs camp. Victorino was teammates with Jon Lester, John Lackey, David Ross and Ryan Dempster in Boston.

Shane Victorino turned 35 in November and batted .230/.308/.292 last season with four doubles, two triples and a home run for a .601 OPS.

Victorino hit .294/.351/.451 in 122 games for the Red Sox in 2013 with 26 doubles, two triples and 15 home runs for a .801 OPS and made a very questionable off-season signing look good for one year. The three-year contract Victorino signed with Boston ended at the end of the 2015 season.

According to Jon Heyman, the Cubs had a deal in place with Victorino before re-signing Dexter Fowler. The Cubs honored the agreement with Victorino. If he makes the team, Victorino will have a $1 million base salary and can earn an additional $1 million through performance bonus according to Jerry Crasnick.
