The final weekend in January started on a high note Friday for 18 players currently not on the Cubs’ 40-man roster when the Cubs announced the list of NRIs to Spring Training. And six of the non-roster invitees to big league camp are from the Cubs’ system.
Six players made MLB Pipeline’s list of the Top 100 Prospects. David Ross talked about the Cubs on Saturday morning. There was a minor league signing. And of course rumors about Rays pitching and Dexter Fowler.

The CCO Talks Cubs Middle Infield Prospects on South Bend Cubs Radio
Tom continued his five-part series on South Bend Cubs Radio talking prospects with Darin Pritchett and Rick Carter. The third installment was about the middle infield prospects in the Cubs’ system.
Two of the top prospects in the organization play shortstop and one is converting to second base. There are more middle infielders down on the farm than Gleyber Torres and Ian Happ.

Rays Reportedly Less Likely to Make Another Trade that Includes Pitching
The Rays dealt one of the pitchers the Cubs have been linked rather heavily to this winter. Jake McGee was traded to the Rockies for Corey Dickerson in a four-player transaction.
With McGee gone, the Rays are less likely to make another trade that includes pitching before Spring Training … at least according to one report out of Tampa.
Cubs Invite 18 Non-Roster Players to Spring Training Including Almora, Underwood and Rivero
The Cubs released the list of non-roster invitees to Spring Training. 18 players received NRIs from the front office, including six players from the system … OF Albert Almora Jr., RHP Duane Underwood Jr., RHP Armando Rivero, C Taylor Davis, RHP Felix Pena and OF John Andreoli.

Cubs Sign RHP Jonathan Pettibone to Minor League Contract with Invite to Spring Training
The Cubs announced signing Jonathan Pettibone to a minor league deal Friday with the release of the list of NRIs for the spring.
Pettibone’s status for the spring is unknown at this point, he is recovering from his second shoulder surgery.
Six Cubs Prospects Land in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 List for 2016
For the second straight year, six of the Cubs prospects were included in MLB Pipeline’s list of the Top 100 Prospects in the game.
Gleyber Torres checked in at No. 28, and Willson Contreras came in at No. 50 … click on the link to find out the other four players and where they were ranked.

Theo Epstein was in Boston last week for his foundation’s annual dinner. Epstein met with the media prior to the private event.
With David Ortiz retiring, Epstein would like to see him go out on top … and in the World Series against the Cubs.
