The Cubs announced Friday the team signed RHP Jonathan Pettibone to a minor league contract. Pettibone was one of 18 players that received a non-roster invite to big league camp.
The 25-year old right hander was selected by the Phillies in the third round of the 2008 draft. Pettibone spent his career in the Phillies organization but did not pitch last season after undergoing his second shoulder surgery.
Pettibone missed a majority of the 2014 season after undergoing shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. Pettibone was unable to pitch last season. Pettibone had a second procedure on his right shoulder in July.
The Phillies granted Pettibone free agency last November.
Pettibone started 18 games for the Phillies in 2013. Pettibone was 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 4.18 FIP. Pettibone allowed 50 runs, 45 earned, on 109 hits with 38 walks and 66 strikeouts in 100 1/3 innings. Pettibone made two starts for Philly in 2014 and was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA and 2.22 WHIP (10 runs, nine earned, 17 hits, three walks, six strikeouts in nine innings).
Over two seasons in the majors, Pettibone is 5-5 with a 4.75 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 4.31 FIP in 20 starts. And in seven minor league seasons, Pettibone was 35-32 in 97 games, 95 starts, with a 3.45 ERA and 1.22 WHIP.
