Happy New Year! As we turn the page on the calendar, it means playoff time in the Caribbean. Arismendy Alcantara is powering Licey in the Dominican Republic, while Christian Villanueva helped lead Obregon to the best record in Mexico. Santurce edged their way into the playoff picture in Puerto Rico with Javier Baez moving around the diamond.
It all culminates in the Caribbean World Series, but for now, take a look at this week’s Down on the Farm Report.

Dominican Winter League
Estrellas de Oriente
Oriente started the playoffs on the wrong foot as they dropped a 5-1 game to Escogido last Monday. Luis Parra pitched a perfect eighth inning and had a strikeout.
The bad luck for Estrellas continued on Tuesday as they lost to Licey 4-3 in 13 innings. Luis Parra was unable to get the Stars out of trouble in the 13th. After inducing a double play, Parra gave up a double that scored the go-ahead run.
Tigres del Licey
Licey is proving to be one of the teams to beat in the DWL playoffs as they raised their round-robin record to 3-1 on Wednesday with a 4-2 victory over Oriente. Arismendy Alcantara was 1-for-4 in the game and played second base.
It was a romp for the Tigers on Saturday, as they blew past Este 16-5. Arismendy Alcantara got into the fun as he entered the game in the sixth inning at second base. Alcantara was 1-for-2 with a two-run home run.
Mexican Pacific League
Yaquis de Obregon
Wrapping up the regular season, Obregon is powering itself to a second half title and the best record in the LMP as they defeated Hermosillo 5-3 last Sunday. Christian Villanueva remained at DH and was 0-for-3 but had a walk and a run scored.
The Yaquiz ended the regular season on Wednesday with an 8-3 victory over Hermosillo. Designated Hitter Christian Villanueva finished sixth in the league with a .322 average as he was 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored in the win.
The Tribe opened their playoff series with Los Mochis on New Year’s Day, defeating the Caneros 7-4. Christian Villanueva was the DH and went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League
Cangrejeros de Santurce
The regular season rolled on in Puerto Rico last Sunday as Santurce lost a close one, 2-1 to Mayaguez. Javier Baez lined up in center field and was 1-for-4 in the loss.
On Tuesday, the Cangrejeros were able to hold off a late inning rally by Caguas to win 5-3. Starting back-to-back games in center field, Javier Baez was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Andres Santiago pitched a perfect seventh inning.
It was a big night for the Crabbers on Wednesday as they blew away Carolina 15-1. Javier Baez was the centerpiece as the shortstop went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and a run scored.
Venezuelan Winter League
Aguilas de Zulia
Coming into the final days of the regular season, Zulia is limping home as they lost 8-7 to La Guaira last Sunday. Bryant Flete got the start in left field and was 1-for-4.
