According to Baseball America, the Cubs signed RHP Drew Rucinski and re-signed LHP Jeffry Antigua to minor league contracts.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-hander has pitched in seven games in the majors with one start over the last two seasons. Rucinski is 0-2 with a 6.28 ERA and 1.88 WHIP. In four games, one start, in 2015, Rucinski was 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA and 2.28 WHIP. Rucinski allowed six runs on 10 hits with six walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.
Rucinski, 26, made 22 starts for Triple-A Salt Lake (Pacific Coast League) last season and was 5-7 with a 5.69 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. In 112 1/3 innings, Rucinski gave up 73 runs, 71 earned, on 141 hits with 44 walks and 87 strikeouts.
According to Baseball America, Rucinski “pitches with a herky-jerky delivery that adds deception and allows him to pitch up in the zone.” His fastball sits in the 91-94 mph range with riding life and an 84 mph splitter that is his outpitch. Rucinski also features a “fringy slider and changeup” in the 80 mph range.
Lefty Jeffry Antigua has spent his entire pro career in the Cubs’ system. The 25-year old southpaw spent time with Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa in 2015. Antigua was a combined 6-6 in 30 games, 22 starts, with a 3.85 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Antigua allowed 62 runs, 57 earned, on 127 hits with 46 walks and 77 strikeouts in 133 1/3 innings.
In 10 games, six starts, for Triple-A Iowa, Antigua was 1-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 0.99 WHIP (17 runs, 12 earned, on 28 hits with 13 walks and 19 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings).
Several former Cubs signed minor league contracts with new organizations according to Baseball America.
RHP Brian Schlitter inked a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies. Schlitter spent time in Joe Maddon’s bullpen this past season and a majority of the year with Triple-A Iowa. Schlitter was 1-2 in 10 relief appearances in the majors in 2015 with a 7.36 ERA and 1.90 WHIP. In Iowa, Schlitter posted a 2-3 record in 45 games with a 1.61 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with 23 saves.
SS Hak-Ju Lee, one of the main players in the Matt Garza deal from the Rays that included Chris Archer, signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Catcher J.C Boscan signed on with the Royals. And Chadd Krist inked a deal with the White Sox.
