Cubs Prospect Jeimer Candelario Continues to Impress in the Arizona Fall League

November 12, 2015 11:00 am By Neil 14 Comments

Jeimer Candelario was rather impressive last weekend during the Arizona Fall League’s Fall Stars Game, in the field and at the plate, and he’s kept hitting this week in regular season AFL action.

Candelario put together a good season with High-A Myrtle Beach and Double-A Tennessee and one of the top prospects in the Cubs’ system has improved his stock in the Arizona Fall League.

Candelario collected three hits in five at bats Monday that included a home run and two runs scored. Tuesday, Candelario went yard again with a solo shot to left center.

On Wednesday, Candelario was 1-for-3 with a walk as his homer streak came to an end. Candelario has reached base safely in 10 of the last 11 games he’s played in with hits in nine of those games.

The switch-hitting third baseman is doing equal damage from both sides of the plate. Candelario is batting .350/.372/.725 with three doubles and four home runs from the left side with a 1.097 OPS and versus southpaws from the right side he is hitting .350/.381/.650 with three doubles and a home run for a 1.031 OPS in 20 at bats.

PrintIn 15 games this fall, Jeimer Candelario is batting .350/.375/.700 with six doubles, five home runs and a 1.075 OPS. Candelario has walked three times with seven strikeouts in 60 at bats.

Defensively, Candelario has committed three errors and all three miscues came in the same game on Nov. 3.

Mark Zagunis continues to get on base half the time he steps to the plate. Zagunis has a .509 on-base percentage after 13 games. Zagunis has walked 18 times with nine strikeouts in 37 at bats. Zagunis is hitting .270/.509/.405 with two doubles and a home run for a .914 OPS.

Cael Brockmeyer is batting .167/.286/.222 in five games with a double and a .508 OPS.

On the mound, Rob Zastryzny is 2-1 in six games, five starts, with a 4.70 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. The lefty has allowed 12 runs on 22 hits (four home runs) with five walks and 25 strikeouts in 23 innings.

Pierce Johnson is 0-2 in five starts with an 8.04 ERA and 1.91 WHIP. In 15 2/3 innings, Johnson has given up 15 runs, 14 earned, on 19 hits (four home runs) with 11 walks and 11 strikeouts.

Corey Black has appeared in eight games plus the Fall Stars Game. Black has struggled with his command and is 1-0 with an 11.42 ERA and 2.19 WHIP. Black has allowed 13 runs, 11 earned, on 12 hits (one home run) with seven walks and six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.

David Garner has also pitched in eight games but the reports on the 23-year old right hander have been very good. Garner has given up four runs on 10 hits (one home run) with four walks and 10 strikeouts. Garner is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.
