Kyle Hendricks (7-7, 4.23/1.21/3.55) vs. Yordano Ventura (12-8, 4.40/1.35/3.77)
It’s the regular season finale at Wrigley Field for the Cubs tonight in a make-up game with the Royals. Rain in late May (May 29-31) forced the two teams to push what was the second game of a weekend series until tonight. The Cubs and Royals split the two games four months ago, with Kansas City taking the opener. Tsuyoshi Wada and Yordano Ventura were scheduled to pitch on that Saturday in May and squared off on Sunday instead. The Cubs wore down Ventura and pulled out a 2-1 win in 11 innings on a walk-off single from David Ross.
The Kansas City Royals are the AL Central Champions for 2015 and enter play today with exact same record as the playoff-bound Chicago Cubs.
What a year it has been at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are 48-32 at Wrigley, the fifth best home record in the NL, the 20th time the team has posted at least 48 wins at the corner of Clark and Addison.
Tonight all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks is coming off an encouraging outing against the Brewers. Hendricks posted a quality start but took the loss after the Cubs managed just a Jorge Soler solo home run. Hendricks allowed three runs on four hits in six innings. Hendricks did not walk any batters and struck out eight. Hendricks has two quality starts in his last three outings.
It’s been a rather rough second half for Kyle Hendricks. In his last 13 starts, Hendricks is 3-3 with a 5.22 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Hendricks is 1-1 in his last four outings with a 4.79 ER and 1.02 WHIP. Hendricks has been doing a better job of pitching ahead in the count and has cut down his walks. Only four free passes in his last 20 2/3 innings, compared to 14 in the previous 31 2/3 innings.
Kyle Hendricks is 2-3 in 14 starts at Wrigley Field this season with a 3.63 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Hendricks missed the Royals in May and makes his first start against them tonight.
Jonny Gomes (0-for-1) is the only player on the Royals roster that has faced Kyle Hendricks in regular season big league ballgame.
The Cubs get their second look at Yordano Ventura. The Cubs saw Ventura on May 31 and was able to get to him late and beat the Royals by a final of 2-1 in 11 innings. Ventura is coming off a no-decision to the Mariners. Ventura allowed three runs on six hits with a walks and four strikeouts in six innings. The Royals ended up winning the game 4-3.
Ventura has not pitched to expectations this season and struggled with consistency. The extremely talented right hander is 8-2 in his last 13 starts with a 4.09 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Over his last five starts, Ventura is 3-1 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.62 WHIP (15 runs, 14 earned, on 35 hits with 12 walks and 32 strikeouts in 29 innings).
Outside of Kansas City this year, Ventura is 5-3 in 12 starts with a 5.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. Ventura makes the second start of his career against the Cubs tonight. Ventura allowed one run on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts in seven innings on May 31.
