Jake Arrieta (20-6, 1.88/0.90/2.45) vs. A.J. Burnett (9-5, 3.15/1.36/3.27)
The Cubs turn to Jake Arrieta tonight as they look to salvage the finale of the three-game series with the Pirates. Joe Maddon said Saturday his team would get back to work today and start preparing for the post-season. The Cubs chances of catching the Pirates for home field in the Wild Card Game are slim at best right now. Entering play tonight, the Cubs are 5 ½ back of the Bucs with eight games to play. With Pittsburgh chasing the Cardinals, Maddon might wait until after tonight to give some his regulars a much needed break.
Jake Arrieta shoots for win No. 21 on the season in his next to last start of the regular season. Maddon will reportedly back Arrieta down to around 100 pitches tonight. Arrieta is expected to make his next start in five days against the Brewers in order to maintain his routine. If the Cubs do not change their plans, Arrieta’s pitch count in Milwaukee could be as low as 85.
The Cubs have already won the season series with the Pirates (10-8). A win tonight would be No. 90 on the season for the Cubs, a team most thought would not finish at .500 for the year.
Tonight all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta etched his name in the Cubs history book his last time out. Arrieta posted win No. 20 with a complete game blanking of the Brewers. Arrieta allowed three hits, two were of the infield variety, with a walk and 11 strikeouts. The Cubs won for the 11th straight time in which Arrieta took the hill.
Over his last four starts, Arrieta is 3-0 with a 0.55 ERA and 0.70 WHIP. Arrieta has allowed three runs, two earned, on 19 hits with four walks and 30 strikeouts in 33 innings.
The numbers Arrieta has put up since the break are not only ridiculous, but also historic. Arrieta is 10-1 in his last 13 starts with a 0.86 ERA and 0.80 WHIP. Arrieta has allowed 12 runs, nine earned, on 52 hits with 23 walks and 97 strikeouts in 94 1/3 innings.
Tonight is Arrieta’s last start of the regular season at Wrigley. Arrieta is 8-5 in 14 starts with a 2.11 ERA and 0.91 WHIP … and since the trade with the Orioles, Arrieta is 17-7 in 32 starts at Wrigley with a 2.07 ERA and 0.88 WHIP.
Jake Arrieta makes his fifth start of the year against the Pirates tonight. Arrieta is 2-1 in the first four with a 0.93 ERA and 0.76 WHIP (four runs, three earned, on 17 hits with five walks and 24 strikeouts in 29 innings).

Burnett is coming off a solid start in Colorado and is 1-0 in three outings since returning from the disabled list with a 3.94 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.
