Jake Arrieta (19-6, 1.99/0.93/2.52) vs. A.J. Burnett (8-5, 3.14/1.33/3.22)
It’s Roberto Clemente Day around baseball as the players and league honor a legend on and off the field.
Jake Arrieta takes the mound tonight looking for the Cubs second straight win over the Pirates. The Cubs enter play four games behind the Bucs in the standings. And a win tonight would inch the Cubs closer to the goal.
Jake Arrieta is shooting for win No. 20 on the season which would make Arrieta the Cubs’ first 20-game winner since Jon Lieber in 2001. Arrieta has pitched well against the Pirates this season and will have to keep them off the scoreboard while his teammates figure out A.J. Burnett.
A.J. Burnett makes his second start back from the DL. Burnett spent time on the shelf with inflammation in his right elbow. Burnett has dominated the Cubs over his career. Based on career numbers, Joe Maddon should include Starlin Castro and Austin Jackson in his starting lineup and possibly Jonathan Herrera.
Jake Arrieta is coming off his eighth straight win. The Cubs are 9-0 the last nine times Arrieta has taken the hill. Arrieta allowed one earned run on six hits over eight innings to the Phillies with two walks and seven strikeouts. Arrieta has allowed one run on 10 hits with two walks and 14 strikeouts in his last two starts (0.56 ERA, 0.75 WHIP).
Arrieta’s post-break numbers are simply ridiculous. Arrieta is 9-1 in his last 11 starts with a 0.93 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. In 77 1/3 innings, Arrieta has allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on 43 hits with 21 walks and 81 strikeouts.
Outside of Wrigley this year, Arrieta is 12-1 in 16 starts with a 1.72 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. And he makes his fourth start of the season tonight against the Pirates.
In three games versus the Bucs this year, Jake Arrieta is 2-1 with a 0.86 ERA and 0.71 WHIP (two runs, 11 hits, four walks and 19 strikeouts in 21 innings). At PNC Park, Arrieta is 2-0 in two starts with a 0.64 ERA and 0.64 WHIP.

A.J. Burnett made his first start in close to six weeks six days ago against the Brewers. Burnett struggled early but settled down and gave the Pirates five innings. Burnett missed time with inflammation in his right elbow and there were doubts he would be able to pitch at all this season. Burnett allowed three runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
After a sensational first half in which he earned a spot on the NL All-Star team, Burnett is 1-2 in his last four starts with a 9.00 ERA and 1.90 WHIP. Burnett is 2-3 in 11 starts at PNC this year with a 2.33 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
