Kyle Hendricks (6-6, 4.08/1.23/3.51) vs. Alec Asher (0-2, 10.61/2.04/5.82)
Joe Maddon gives the ball to Kyle Hendricks in the nightcap of the twin bill as the Cubs look to take two from the Phillies.
Jake Arrieta did his job in the opener and held the Phillies to one run over eight innings. Austin Jackson, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell each had run scoring doubles and Starlin Castro went yard in the 5-1 win in game one.
Look for Maddon to run out a left-handed heavy lineup in game two with the Phillies sending right hander Alec Asher to the hill.
Kyle Hendricks is coming off a solid outing against the Diamondbacks. Hendricks gave up one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Hendricks struggled with his consistency and location but he was able to execute a pitch when he needed it. Joe Maddon has not allowed Hendricks to face many teams for a third time through the lineup. At least six and a quality start from Hendricks tonight would help.
Over his last 10 starts, Hendricks is 2-2 with a 5.06 ERA and 1.44 WHIP (31 runs, 30 earned, on 55 hits with 22 walks and 53 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings). And on the road this year, Hendricks is 4-4 in 14 starts with a 4.56 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.
Kyle Hendricks missed the Phillies in July and makes his first career start against Philadelphia tonight. And no one on the Phillies’ active roster has faced Hendricks in a big league ballgame.
Alec Asher makes the third start of his Major League career tonight. The Phillies acquired Asher from the Rangers along with Jorge Alfaro, Jake Thompson, Nick Williams, Jered Eickhoff and Matt Harrison for Cole Hamels.
Asher struggled against the Red Sox in his last outing. Asher lasted 3 2/3 innings after giving up seven runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Over his first two starts in the majors, Asher has allowed 11 runs on 16 hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings.
Asher was 3-6 in 12 starts for Triple-A Round Rock in Texas’ system before the trade. Asher allowed 36 runs, 34 earned, on 71 hits with 19 walks and 54 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings (4.73 ERA, 1.39 WHIP). Prior to his call-up, Asher was 2-0 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley with a 2.08 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Over three levels in the Rangers and Phillies systems this year, Asher was 6-10 in 24 starts with a 4.25 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.
Baseball America ranked Alec Asher as the 13th best prospect in the Rangers system prior to the season. Asher sits in the low-90s with his fastball and can touch 95 mph when he needs it. Asher relies on his fastball due to the lack of a dominate secondary pitch. Asher features an average low-80s slider and change-up.
The Cubs get their first look at Alec Asher tonight. No one on the Cubs roster has had an at-bat against Alec Asher in a Major League game.
