According to multiple reports, the first wave of September call-ups Tuesday will be four players, two position players and two pitchers. The Cubs will officially add INF Javier Baez, LHP Tsuyoshi Wada, RHP Trevor Cahill and OF Quintin Berry to the active roster Tuesday.
The Cubs will have to open two spots on the 40-man roster for Trevor Cahill and Quintin Berry. And those roster moves were not announced Monday.
Joe Maddon will have five new players on his active roster Tuesday. And David Ross could be activated Tuesday as well. Ross has until Wednesday, by rule, to return from the Family Emergency List.
The Cubs acquired OF Austin Jackson from the Seattle Mariners on Monday afternoon. To make room on the 40-man roster, INF Mike Olt was designated for assignment.
According to a report from Bruce Levine, the Cubs tried to acquire pitching before the waiver deadline (11:00pm CDT). Ken Rosenthal reported just after the deadline that the Cubs did not make any additional trades Monday.
Until the 40-man roster moves are announced, it is unclear how Maddon’s active roster will be constructed. Prior to the roster expanding, the 25-man active roster consisted of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio was expected to be up Tuesday. Bonifacio was not in Iowa’s lineup Monday. Updates on RHP Rafael Soriano and RHP Carl Edwards Jr. were not provided Monday. Soriano and Edwards Jr. are expected to be added to the active roster this month.
Javier Baez is expected to see time at second, third and shortstop over the next month. Maddon plans on moving him around the field. Baez hit .333/.383/.518/.901 with seven doubles, two triples and five home runs in 33 games after being activated from the disabled list.
Tsuyoshi Wada posted a 3-2 record in his nine starts after the break with a 4.88 ERA and 1.48 WHIP (57 hits, 14 walks, 33 strikeouts in 48 innings). The Cubs have not said how Wada will be used. A sixth starter will be needed in two weeks (Sept. 15) for the day-night doubleheader at PNC Park.
The Cubs signed RHP Trevor Cahill to a minor league contract Aug. 18 and OF Quintin Berry was added to the organization on a minor league deal Aug. 24.
Cahill appeared in five games, all in relief, with the I-Cubs. Cahill gave up five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts, but no runs, in 7 2/3 innings (0.00 ERA, 1.04 WHIP).
Berry had 14 at bats in five games with the Iowa Cubs. Berry was 2-for-14 with two walks and seven strikeouts. Berry did not attempt a stolen base with Iowa after swiping 35 bases (caught six times) in 106 games with Triple-A Pawtucket.
The Cubs will make the official announcements on the roster moves Tuesday.
