Cubs Prospect RHP Brad Markey Named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week

Markey090915Minor League Baseball announced Tuesday its players and pitchers of the week and High-A Myrtle Beach’s RHP Brad Markey took home Carolina League Pitcher of the Week (Aug. 31-Sept. 7) honors.

Brad Markey completed a seven-inning start on Sept. 4 against Wilmington in which allowed no runs and only three hits without a walk and struck out six batters. Markey improved to 7-0 in nine appearances, eight starts, with the Pelicans after the seven shutout innings against the Blue Rocks.

Since his promotion to High-A Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend Cubs on July 5, Brad Markey was 7-0 with a 1.15 ERA and 0.75 WHIP. Markey gave up 35 hits with six walks and 40 strikeouts in 55 innings.

PrintBrad Markey is the third consecutive Pelicans player to win a weekly award.

RHP Brad Markey joined C/1B Cael Brockmeyer (Midwest League: April 9-19), 1B Dan Vogelbach (Southern League: April 9-19; April 20-26), RHP Tyler Skulina (Carolina League: April 27-May 3), OF Billy McKinney (Carolina League: May 4-10), OF/1B Yasiel Balaguert (Midwest League: May 25-31), OF Kevin Brown (Carolina League: May 25-31), INF Christian Villanueva (Pacific Coast League: June 1-7; July 13-19), OF Mark Zagunis (Carolina League: June 15-21), OF Jeffrey Baez (Midwest League: July 13-19), C Willson Contreras (Southern League: July 26-Aug. 2), RHP Jonathan Martinez (Carolina League: July 26-Aug. 2 ), RHP Adbert Alzolay (Northwest League: July 26-Aug. 2), RHP Erick Leal (Midwest League: Aug 3-9), RHP Ryan Williams (Southern League: Aug. 10-16), C/INF Ben Carhart (Carolina League: Aug. 17-23), LHP Eric Jokisch (Pacific Coast League: Aug. 24-30), C Victor Caratini (Carolina League: Aug. 24-30) and RHP Oscar De La Cruz (Northwest League: Aug. 24-30) as the prospects in the organization that won Player of the Week awards for their respective leagues.

The Cubs selected the 23-year old right hander in the 19th round of the 2014 draft. Markey began the season with Low-A South Bend and pitched in 12 games with one start before he was promoted. With the South Bend Cubs, Markey saved two games but did not have a record and allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 24 hits with 23 strikeouts and four walks in 29 innings (2.48 ERA, 0.97 WHIP).

For the season, Brad Markey was 7-0 in 21 games, nine starts, with two saves. Markey allowed 16 runs, 15 earned, on 59 hits with 10 walks and 63 strikeouts in 84 innings (1.61 ERA, 0.82 WHIP).

Brad Markey was the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July.
