Dan Haren (7-7, 3.42/1.09/4.59) vs. Jeff Locke (6-6, 4.21/1.42/3.75)
The Cubs’ seven-game, two-city road trip wraps up tonight with Joe Maddon’s team in search of its seventh straight win. The Cubs are 5-0 in what became a six-game road trip with Monday’s postponement. If the Cubs are able to take care of business behind Dan Haren, it will be a happy flight back to Chicago riding the longest winning streak of the season.
Dan Haren makes his Cubs’ debut tonight. The veteran right hander was acquired at the deadline from the Marlins for minor leaguers RHP Ivan Pineyro and SS Elliot Soto. Haren does not have the top of the rotation stuff he had early in his career. Haren has learned how to pitch. The Cubs are banking on Haren to provide stability, and quality innings, to a spot in the rotation that has been a revolving door this season.
Kyle Schwarber is expected back in the lineup and behind the plate. Even with southpaw Jeff Locke on the hill, Schwarber should make his first start of the series. Keep an eye on how quick Haren and Schwarber can get on the same page. Schwarber has shown improvement defensively with pitchers he had a small history with in Spring Training. Schwarber puts in the film work, now he gets to apply it with a pitcher he has not caught before.
