Jake Arrieta (11-6, 2.62/1.02/2.61) vs. J.A. Happ (4-6, 4.64/1.41/4.06 – 0-0, -.–/-.–/-.–)
With the weather cancelling the first of three games in Pittsburgh, Joe Maddon hands the ball to Jake Arrieta tonight in what should be the first of now two with Pirates. The forecast looks a lot better 24 hours later and the division rivals should be able to get the game in without any delays.
Jake Arrieta will face newly acquired lefty, J.A. Happ. The veteran southpaw makes his first start with the Pirates tonight. Neal Huntington traded RHP Adrian Simpson to the Mariners for Happ prior to the deadline. Happ is filling in for A.J. Burnett, who may miss only four weeks after reports over the weekend pointed to him possibly being out for the rest of the season.
With the lefty on the hill for the Bucs, Joe Maddon will likely run out the same batting order with the exception of Arrieta in the eight-hole behind David Ross. Left-handers (.287/.321/.415) have hit slightly better against Happ this year than right-handers (.277/.335/.395).
Tonight all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta has struggled with his command early in each of his last two starts and the escalated pitch counts have kept him from going deeper in the games. Arrieta must come out tonight throwing quality strikes. A seven-inning outing should be a must for a top of the rotation starter against a team they are chasing in the standings.
Jake Arrieta allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in six innings to the Brewers. Arrieta received a no-decision thanks to Anthony Rizzo. Arrieta is 4-1 in his last six starts with a 1.90 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. Arrieta has allowed nine runs on 28 hits with 11 walks and 44 strikeouts in his last 42 2/3 innings.
The road has been rather kind to Arrieta this season. In 11 starts outside of Wrigley, Arrieta is 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. And Arrieta faces the Bucs for the third time on the year.
Jake Arrieta is 1-1 in two starts versus the Pirates with a 1.29 ERA and 0.71 WHIP. Arrieta beat the Pirates in Pittsburgh on April 20 in a 5-2 Cubs’ victory. Arrieta dropped the game with the Pirates at Wrigley on May 17 despite not allowed an earned run in a 3-0 defeat.

J.A. Happ makes his debut with the Pirates tonight. Happ is very familiar with the parks in the NL Central from his days with the Phillies and Astros early in his career. The 32-year old lefty was hit around pretty hard in his last start with the Mariners. The Twins tagged him for seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
