Dan Haren (8-8, 3.76/1.14/4.89) vs. Madison Bumgarner (15-6, 3.02/1.04/2.85)
The Cubs wrap up the series and season-series against the Giants this afternoon. The Cubs have already won the season series (5-1) having taken five of the first six from the defending champs. The Cubs have split the first two games of this series and a victory in the rubber match would make it seven wins in eight games for Joe Maddon’s team.
Dan Haren takes the mound this afternoon and for the second time in three starts he will face one of the best lefties in the game. With Madison Bumgarner on the hill, Haren must keep the Giants in the yard and off the scoreboard.
Dexter Fowler is expected back today and Joe Maddon will use his right-handed heavy lineup. The Cubs face three southpaws over the next four games. With Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw in back-to-back games, Kyle Schwarber might get a break while Chris Coghlan will be available off the bench.
Scoring opportunities figure to be at a minimum today for the Cubs, failing to execute with runners on base will keep Maddon from having Meat Loaf on the flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
Today all starts with Dan Haren …
Dan Haren makes his fifth start for the Cubs this afternoon. Haren is coming off a better outing against the Braves than his final line indicates. Haren left the game with the Cubs’ leading 3-2, two men on and one out. Travis Wood could not pick-up the last two outs before the Braves scored five runs, two of which were charged to Haren. Joe Maddon needs more than the barely five innings Haren is averaging with the Cubs from the veteran right hander today.
After being charged with four runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings his last time out, Haren is 1-1 in his last four starts with a 6.05 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.
Haren did not face the Giants at Wrigley earlier in the month. But today is his third start of the season versus San Francisco. Haren is 1-0 in two starts with a 3.55 ERA and 1.42 WHIP (six runs, five earned, on 18 hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings). Haren beat the Giants in San Francisco on May 7 (two runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts in seven innings) and received a no-decision on July 1 (four runs, three earned, on 10 hits with no walks and one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings).
For his career, Dan Haren is 7-6 in 20 games, 19 starts, versus the Giants with a 3.00 ERA and 1.14 WHIP … at AT & T Park, Haren is 3-4 in 11 games, 10 starts, with a 3.61 ERA and 1.41 WHIP.
