Jake Arrieta (15-6, 2.30/0.99/2.63) vs. Matt Cain (2-3, 5.66/1.53/5.30)
The Cubs have taken the show out West and will spend the next six days in California playing the defending World Series Champions and one of the pre-season favorites to win it all this year. The Cubs open a three-game series in San Francisco tonight. And the trip to the Coast wraps up at Dodger Stadium on Sunday Night Baseball.
This is a huge trip for Cubs and while Joe Maddon downplayed its importance he would not have shuffled his rotation otherwise. The Cubs have a chance to create a lot of breathing room in the Wild Card race over the next six days.
The Cubs swept the four-game series against the Giants at Wrigley earlier this month (Aug. 6-9) but will have to face Madison Bumgarner in the regular season finale with the Giants on Thursday afternoon.
Jake Arrieta takes the ball tonight and will start twice during the trip. Arrieta faces Matt Cain and a Giants lineup without Hunter Pence. Bobby Evans made a deal for Marlon Byrd with Pence on the shelf. Byrd has seemingly stepped up his game when he’s faced the Cubs since the front office shipped him to Boston prior to his suspension.
Kyle Hendricks squares off against Jake Peavy on Wednesday night. And Thursday, it’s Dan Haren versus Madison Bumgarner.
Tonight all starts with Jake Arrieta …
