Jake Arrieta (12-6, 2.50/1.00/2.64) vs. Jake Peavy (2-4, 3.77/1.19/3.87)
Weather permitting … The Cubs wrap up the series today against the Giants. After winning the first three games, Joe Maddon hands the ball to Jake Arrieta looking to complete the four-game sweep over the defending World Series Champions.
The Cubs end a stretch of 17 games in 17 days today dating back to the last day off on July 23. The Cubs are 10-5 in the 15 games they completed and 10-2 in the last 12. The Cubs and Pirates have not announced a make-up date for the game that was postponed last Monday.
Today all starts with Jake Arrieta …
Jake Arrieta dominated the Pirates his last time out. Arrieta allowed just two hits while walking three batters over seven shutout innings in a 5-0 win in Pittsburgh. Arrieta’s strikeouts were down a little but against that team in their park, it is hard to see another starter performing better than he did last Tuesday night … just ask Clayton Kershaw.
Arrieta has been one of the top starters in the National League over the last two-plus months. Arrieta is 2-1 in his last four starts with a 1.73 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. Arrieta will look to improve his stats at Wrigley today against the Giants.
In 10 home games this year, Arrieta is 4-5 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Arrieta has allowed 23 runs on 51 hits with 19 walks and 67 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings.
One of Arrieta’s not-so-good starts a year ago came against the Giants. Arrieta allowed four runs on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts in six innings in San Francisco on May 27. Arrieta and the Cubs were shutout 4-0. For his career, Jake Arrieta is 1-1 in two starts versus the Giants with a 3.46 ERA and 1.00 WHIP.

Jake Peavy loves pitching against and beating the Cubs and he will be at the top of his game this afternoon. Peavy is coming off two solid starts, one against the Brewers and the other in Atlanta.
Peavy is 2-0 in his last four starts with a 2.96 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. And he’s been more than serviceable on the road this year. Peavy is 1-2 in four starts with a 4.37 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.
Jake Peavy wanted to sign with the Cubs in the off-season, but the front office went a different direction. Peavy is 8-5 in 16 career starts against the Cubs with a 2.76 ERA and 1.21 WHIP … and at Wrigley, 4-3 in nine starts with a 3.78 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.
