Kyle Hendricks (5-5, 3.67/1.15/3.34) vs. Matt Cain (2-2, 4.91/1.46/4.43)
The Cubs have won nine of the last 11 and turn to Kyle Hendricks this afternoon in game three with the Giants. Hendricks has the tough task of keeping the Giants in check while his teammates figure out Matt Cain.
Miguel Montero is expected back in the starting lineup today with Kyle Schwarber in left field. Joe Maddon said Friday that Addison Russell will be at shortstop this afternoon. Maddon will likely run out a lineup similar to the one he used Friday with Chris Coghlan at second base. Left handers (.352/.400/.567) have lit up Matt Cain this season while right handers (.269/.298/.452) have also had a lot of success. But an organization that could not find a left-handed bat just five years ago will likely have a starting nine this afternoon with only three right-handed position players in the batting order.
After Friday’s five-out save and appearing in the first two games of the series, Hector Rondon will likely be unavailable for today’s game. Joe Maddon will have to push the right buttons again late in the game if the Cubs have a lead.
This afternoon all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks had a good start his last time out against the Brewers. Hendricks held the Brewers to one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. One got away from Hendricks that hit Ryan Braun and he scored Milwaukee’s only run.
Hendricks needed the start with the Brewers to go his way after poor outings against the Reds and Rockies. Hendricks is 1-1 in his last four starts with a 4.18 ERA and 1.27 WHIP.
Kyle Hendricks makes his 10th start of the season at Wrigley this afternoon. Hendricks is 1-2 in the first nine with a 3.23 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. In 53 innings, Hendricks has allowed 19 runs on 45 hits with 11 walks and 49 strikeouts in 53 innings.
Kyle Hendricks faces the Giants in the regular season for the first time today. And no one on Bruce Bochy’s active roster has an at bat against Hendricks in a Major League game that counts.
Matt Cain has not been Matt Cain since he came off the DL on July 2. Cain missed a majority of the first half of the season with a strained right flexor tendon. Cain was hit rather hard his last time out. The Braves scored four runs on 10 hits against Cain in five innings. And in back-to-back outings, Cain has allowed four earned runs while giving up a total of 18 hits.
Matt Cain is 1-1 in his last four starts with a 5.32 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. And on the road this year, Cain is 1-1 in four starts with a 6.00 ERA and 1.71 WHIP.
Matt Cain has owned the Cubs over the course of his career. Cain is 6-2 in 15 starts with a 2.38 ERA and 0.98 WHIP … and at Wrigley, Cain is 1-1 in seven starts with a 2.68 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Cain makes his first start today against the Cubs in over two years. Cain received a no-decision in a 3-2 loss on July 26, 2013.
