Dan Haren (7-7, 3.49/1.12/4.73) vs. Taylor Jungmann (6-3, 2.26/1.07/2.89)

The Cubs get back to work tonight and turn to Dan Haren in the first of three with the Brewers. The Cubs are 4-0 on the current homestand that ends Thursday afternoon.

The Cubs are 10-1 in the last 11 games and must not let up against a dangerous Milwaukee team and a red-hot Khris Davis. The Cubs are 6-4 in the first 10 games with the Brewers after taking four at Miller Park less than two weeks ago.

PrintDan Haren makes his first start for the Cubs at Wrigley tonight. Haren has made five starts over his career at the old ballyard. Haren is 1-2 with a 5.86 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with two home runs allowed in 27 2/3 innings. Haren figures to give up a longball or two tonight. Haren must limit those to solo shots and keep the free passes to a minimum.

Following tonight’s match-up of Dan Haren and Taylor Jungmann, Jason Hammel and Matt Garza are scheduled for Wednesday night. Jon Lester faces rookie Tyler Cravy in the finale of the series and homestand on Thursday afternoon.

Joe Maddon should run out his left-handed heavy lineup with Taylor Jungmann on the hill. Lefties have hit .254/.329/.314 against Jungmann this season while righties have managed a .188/.257/.241 line.

Tonight all starts with Dan Haren …

Dan Haren makes his Cubs’ debut at Wrigley Field. Haren did not like the way he pitched in his first start with the Cubs the last time out. Haren worked with Chris Bosio on a couple of adjustments, mostly mechanical, and it will be interesting to watch how Haren works with Miguel Montero. Haren and Montero have a rather lengthy history from their days together with the Diamondbacks.

Haren pitched better against the Pirates than his final line indicates. Haren allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings in Pittsburgh. The Cubs’ defense had a bad night and did not give Haren the support he requires when he is on the mound.

Dan Haren faces the Brewers for the first time this season. Haren is 2-1 in five career appearances, four starts, versus the Brewers with a 1.85 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Haren was roughed up last year in his only start against Milwaukee. Haren allowed six runs, three earned, on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in three innings.

Brewers Career Numbers against Dan Haren

  • Adam Lind: 3-for-13 with one home run and two walks
  • Khris Davis: 3-for-4 with one double and one walk
  • Jonathan Lucroy: 2-for-4 with one double, one home run and one walk
  • Jean Segura: 0-for-4
  • Ryan Braun: 0-for-2
  • Scooter Gennett: 1-for-2

The Cubs get their second look at Taylor Jungmann tonight and it will be interesting to see which adjustments provide results. The Cubs had a good game plan against Jungmann on July 31 and beat him 4-1. The Cubs made Jungmann work and scored three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. That was Jungmann’s shortest outing since June 25.

Jungmann had a good start versus the Padres following his loss to the Cubs. Jungmann allowed two runs on six hits without a walk and eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Taylor Jungmann is 4-1 in six starts outside of Miller Park with a 2.36 ERA and 0.93 WHIP and he is 2-2 in his last four starts with a 2.45 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.

The Cubs have their work cut out for them tonight.

Cubs Career Numbers against Taylor Jungmann

  • Kris Bryant: 0-for-2 with one walk
  • Starlin Castro: 1-for-3
  • Chris Coghlan: 1-for-3 with one double
  • Dexter Fowler: 0-for-3
  • Anthony Rizzo: 1-for-2 with one walk
  • Addison Russell: 2-for-3
  • Kyle Schwarber: 0-for-3
  • Jorge Soler: 2-for-3
