Kyle Hendricks (4-5, 3.81/1.17/3.36) vs. Matt Garza (5-11, 5.20/1.55/4.74)
It’s Kyle Hendricks turn as the Cubs look to make it three straight over the Brewers and run their winning streak to four games. Joe Maddon’s team has the pleasure of facing Matt Garza and must not allow him to get comfortable. After a rough start to the season and a stint on the disabled list, Garza has pitched much better of late. Due to Garza’s feelings about the Cubs and his former bosses, the Cubs will get his best effort.
Joe Maddon does not like bunting and giving away outs. And that is typically the right philosophy. With Garza on the hill, it would benefit the Cubs if Maddon put his good bunters at the top of the lineup and force Garza to make plays early in the game. While the strategy could backfire, Matt Garza will get rattled which should lead to a positive result for the Cubs at the end of the night.
Tonight all starts with Kyle Hendricks …
Kyle Hendricks received a no-decision in his outing last Monday against the Rockies thanks to his teammates. The Cubs eventually won in the game in dramatic fashion 9-8 thanks to Kris Bryant. Hendricks was not sharp for the third straight outing and could really use a good game tonight.
Hendricks is 1-1 in his last five starts with a 2.90 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, and 0-1 in his last three games with a 5.40 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.
The road has not been too kind to Hendricks this season. ‘The Professor’ is 3-3 in 11 starts outside of Wrigley with a 4.31 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. Hendricks takes on the Brewers for the second time this year. Hendricks received a no decision back on May 10 at Miller Park. Hendricks allowed five hits over 5 1/3 shutout innings in a 3-2 loss to the Brewers.
Kyle Hendricks is 2-0 in three career starts versus the Brewers with a 0.98 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.
