Joe Maddon posted a different lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Giants.
With Dexter Fowler getting a night off, Maddon has Kyle Schwarber leading off and playing left field. Maddon is sticking with Starlin Castro, batting him behind Schwarber and starting at second base.
Addison Russell returns to the starting lineup after missing two games. Russell was lifted in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game with tightness in his groin. Maddon downplayed the injury at the time. Russell did not start Monday and stayed behind in Chicago to be with his fiancé for the birth of their child.
Maddon’s starting lineup for Wednesday against Jake Peavy and the Giants: Kyle Schwarber LF, Starlin Castro 2B, Chris Coghlan RF, Anthony Rizzo 1B, Kris Bryant 3B, Miguel Montero C, Chris Denorfia CF, Kyle Hendricks P and Addison Russell SS.
Kyle Schwarber is the sixth different leadoff man used by Joe Maddon this season. Dexter Fowler has hit at the top of the lineup for a majority of the year. Chris Coghlan, Starlin Castro, Chris Denorfia and Jorge Soler have hit in the top spot of Maddon’s batting order this season.
Over his last 21 games, Kyle Schwarber has hit .234/.348/.610 with two doubles, nine home runs and a .958 OPS. Schwarber has walked 12 times with 27 strikeouts.
Starlin Castro is batting .300/.327/.440 with four doubles and a home run with a .767 OPS over his last 19 games.
With Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw on the schedule, Castro should be in the starting lineup for at least the next three games.
Addison Russell hit a pair of home runs over the weekend and is batting .282/.316/.507 over his last 20 games with five doubles, a triple and three home runs for a .823 OPS.
Reports from San Francisco indicated Wednesday is just a night off for Dexter Fowler, nothing more. Fowler is okay after being hit with a pitch in the hand Monday. X-rays on Fowler’s hand came back negative.
