The Cubs announced two roster moves Wednesday.
The team recalled OF Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa. C David Ross was placed on the Family Emergency List. Szczur is with the Cubs in San Francisco and will be available for Joe Maddon in game two with the Giants.
David Ross left the team due to personal reasons. Ross can be with on the Family Emergency List for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days. With the roster expanding Tuesday, the Cubs could wait until then before activating David Ross.
With Wednesday’s moves, the 25-man roster consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.
The 26-year-old Matt Szczur joins the Cubs for the seventh time this season. He is batting .217/.250/.333 (13-for-60) with four doubles, one homer and eight RBI in 35 games with the Cubs this year. Szczur has batted .292/.355/.442 (78-for-267) with 12 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 31 RBI in 70 games with Iowa this season.
Matt Szczur made his Major League debut with the Cubs last August and batted .226/.273/.355 (14-for-62) with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI in 33 games. He has played 27 games in left field, 14 games in center field and 15 games in right field during his big league career. Overall, Szczur has batted .221/.262/.344 (27-for-122) with six doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI in 68 career major league games.
David Ross, 38, is batting .190/.290/.273 (23-for-121) with seven doubles, one home run and seven RBI in 57 games with the Cubs this season.
