The Cubs announced Saturday morning David Ross has been placed on the bereavement list. Ross’ grandmother passed away. Condolences to David Ross and his family.
David Ross could return to the team as soon as Tuesday. A player may spend between three and seven days on the bereavement list.
The Cubs recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa. Szczur was optioned to Iowa prior to Friday’s game when Miguel Montero was activated from the 15-day DL.
Matt Szczur was recalled last Monday and played in three games before he was optioned to Iowa on Friday. Szczur was 1-for-3 with a double. The 26-year-old Szczur joins the Cubs for the sixth time this season, as he was a member of Chicago’s Opening Day roster until April 19, was with the club from May 6-15, from June 2-6, from June 22-July 4 and from Monday-Friday. In 35 games in the big leagues this season, Szczur is 13-for-60 with four doubles and a home run (.217/.250/.333).
Szczur was riding a 12-game hitting streak with Iowa has and has hit .295/.360/.451 with 10 doubles, two triples and seven home runs for a .811 OPS in 58 games for the I-Cubs this season.
Matt Szczur made his major league debut with the Cubs last August and batted .226 (14-for-62) with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI in 33 games. He has played 27 games in left field, 14 games in center field and 15 games in right field during his big league career. Overall, Szczur has batted .221/.262/.344 (27-for-122) with six doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI in 68 career major league games.
