From the Wire: Cubs Activate Miguel Montero from DL, Option Matt Szczur to Iowa

The Cubs announced two roster moves Friday morning.

C Miguel Montero was activated from the 15-day DL and OF Matt Szczur was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. With the latest round of roster moves, the 25-man roster consists of 13 pitchers (five starters, eight relievers) and 12 position players.

Joe Maddon will have Miguel Montero, Starlin Castro, Jonathan Herrera and Chris Denorfia available off the bench for Friday’s game with the Giants.

Miguel Montero was placed on the 15-day DL on July 17, retroactive to July 12, with a sprained left thumb. Montero was sent on a rehab assignment Sunday and played in four games for Double-A Tennessee. Montero was 3-for-16 with a home run, three strikeouts and four RBI.

In 73 games this season, Montero is batting .230/.337/.392 with five doubles and 10 home runs for a .729 OPS.

PrintMatt Szczur was recalled Monday and played in three games.

Szczur was 1-for-3 with a double during his latest stint in the majors. In 35 games in the big leagues this season, Szczur is 13-for-60 with four doubles and a home run (.217/.250/.333).

Matt Szczur has hit .295/.360/.451 with 10 doubles, two triples and seven home runs for a .811 OPS in 58 games for Iowa this season.
