According to multiple reports, the Blue Jays have acquired LHP David Price from the Tigers.
Three days after landing SS Troy Tulowitzki from the Rockies, Alex Anthopoulos pulled off another surprising move by trading for David Price.
The Jays are sending LHP Daniel Norris, LHP Matt Boyd and LHP Jairo Labourt to the Tigers for Price. And Toronto will pay the remaining money owed to Price on his $19.75 million salary.
Daniel Norris is clearly the headliner of this deal for the Tigers. Detroit received an excellent return for two-plus months of David Price. Norris is considered the top prospect in Toronto’s system and both Boyd and Labourt were ranked in the top 30 of Toronto’s organization in pre-season lists.
The Cubs were reportedly interested in trading for David Price prior to the deadline. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer said publicly that the Cubs would not make deals prior to the deadline that does not make sense for now and the future. The Cubs were not expected to trade top talent from the system to acquire a rental and to this point the front office has stuck to The Plan.
David Price is expected to be the Cubs top target this off-season. And the Blue Jays cannot make a qualifying offer to Price and attach draft pick compensation to him. The Cubs will be able to sign Price, like Jon Lester, without losing a pick in the draft.
The Cubs are still believed to be talking to the Padres about RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Ian Kennedy, RHP Andrew Cashner and RHP Craig Kimbrel.
What has already been a wild week is expected to be very busy over the next 26-plus hours leading up to the deadline on Friday at 3:00pm CDT.
